Death after hip surgery in Dubai: Family of victim to appeal blood money verdict

DUBAI – The family of an Indian woman who died after having hip surgery in Dubai said they will appeal the court’s verdict ordering her doctor to pay blood money or monetary compensation. Betty Rita Fernandes, 42, died just hours after undergoing hip surgery at a hospital in Dubai in 2019. A Dubai Health Authority investigation revealed gross medical negligence by the doctor. Fernandes, who worked as an office manager in Dubai, underwent surgery to correct a displaced hip that has been causing her pain since she was 2-years-old. She suffered deadly complications after the surgery. Her family said they were not satisfied that the punishment for the negligent doctor was only monetary. The court ordered the doctor to pay Dh200,000 in blood money and Dh100,000 fine. Fernandes’ husband, Thomas Lobo, told media that the hospital failed to contact or support the family in the last two years, except for a lone meeting with the CEO a month after the incident. Thomas described the last two years as “emotionally, financially and mentally exhausting time” for the family. They are filing a court appeal in hopes of a “better verdict”. ICA/Expat Media
