Nevada state commission okays boxers' requests to use 8-ounce gloves

LAS VEGAS – The Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) has allowed Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Conor McGregor to use smaller gloves in their August 26 bout at the T-Mobile Arena. The two fighters separately asked the commission to allow them to don eight-ounce gloves, not 10-ounces mitts, in their 154-lb match. The NSAC's decision is an exemption to the body's regulations that any fight above 147 pounds should entail the use of 10-ounce gloves. While it approved the boxers' requests, NSAC Chairman Anthony Marnell lambasted the Mayweather and McGregor camps for using the NSAC as a "pawn" for social media controversy to sell tickets. Marnell also said that while he strongly respects the commission's regulations, especially when it comes to the use of specific gloves, the rules must always "adopt to current times." McGregor welcomed the decision of the NSAC saying: "I'm very happy with how the Nevada State Athletic Commission handled it. They handled it fairly, and they listened to both requests." Mayweather, who is used to fighting in eight-ounce gloves, dared McGregor in a Facebook post to do the same. McGregor uses four-ounce mitts in his MMA fights. Mayweather and McGregor then submitted a waiver to the NSAC this month and asked for a smaller glove size. Meanwhile, the NSAC appointed veteran official Robert Byrd to overseer of the match. Aside from regular inspections, Marnell and other commission members will inspect each fighter's gloves before the fight and alternative gloves not selected for the bout will be donated to the NSAC.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
