Radio operators in Europe, North America, Carribean region confirm receiving Arabic message relayed by Nayif-1

DUBAI – The UAE's first nanosatellite Nayif-1 sent out its first transmission yesterday – a message from Vice President and Dubai Ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid – and it was received by radio operators around the world. Speaking in Arabic, Bin Rashid said: "The renaissance of peoples, nations and civilizations starts with education; and the future of nations starts at their schools." Radio operators from Japan and Chile said they received the message that originated from the control center at the American University of Sharjah (AUS) and relayed via Nayif-1. Radio operators from other places in Europe, North American, the Carribean and even those out at sea also said they received the message "loud and clear" with some of them going on social media to announce the transmission. Nayif-1 transmitted Bin Rashid's message on amateur radio frequencies with its telemetry and transponder data available online at AMSAT-UK, Britain amateur satellite community website. Nayif-1 was launched along with 104 other satellites from India last week. It was the biggest number of satellites sent out to space on a single rocket. Fatma Lootah, deputy project manager of Nayif-1, described the transmission as a landmark moment for the team that built the satellite. The team was composed of scientists of the Mohammad Rashid Space Center and seven engineering students of the AUS. Abdulla Al Shehhi, 24, one of the students who worked on the Nayif-1 project for over a year, said the successful transmission of the Vice President's message and its receipt by radio operators worldwide was a proud moment. Nayif-1 orbits more than 600 kilometers above the Earth at a speed of 7.55 kilometres per second and passes over the ground station at the AUS campus four times a day - twice in the morning and twice at night. Lootah said they decided to put the ground station at the AUS camp so that it would be accessible to students of the university.
