UAE heads UN Space committee, Omran Sharaf as chairman

The UAE reaches a new space exploration milestone as it chairs the Committee on The Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS) of the United Nations (UN) organization. COPUOS is a designated UN committee for governing space exploration and research and its benefits and usage for humanity with 100 member states under the said collaboration. Sarah Bint Yousif Al Amiri, Minister of State for Public Education and Advanced Technology and Chairwomen of the UAE Space Agency expressed her gratitude for the achievement. "This is a huge honour and a tremendous chance to serve the global space sector. As both a young nation and a relatively new entrant to the space sector, we have benefited from the amazing work of the pioneers who have gone before us," said Al Amiri. Omran Sharaf, project director of the Emirates Mars Mission (EMM) is the chairman of COPUOS for the next two years (2022 - 2023). Sharaf has also achieved several milestones in the history of UAE’s space exploration in his career as an Emirati engineer. Sharaf has led UAE’s first successful interplanetary mission and oversaw the entry of the space probe Hope into Mars orbit. He previously represented UAE at the International Committee on Global Navigation Satellite Systems (ICG) of COPUOS and at NATO’s joint studies of emerging space programs. KSO/Expat Media
