Wearing of full face veil 'not appropriate' in Germany, says chancellor

  BERLIN – German Chancellor Angela Merkel wants to ban the Islamic full face veil or burqa in her country because "it is inappropriate." Merkel made the call in a speech during a gathering of her political party, Christian Democrats Union (CDU), on Tuesday and was met with applause by those in attendance. "The full veil is not appropriate here, it should be forbidden wherever it is legally possible. It does not belong to us," said Merkel. Germany joins The Netherlands, Egypt and Tunisia where a ban on the burqa is being proposed. The wearing of full face veil is banned in France, Belgium, Chad, Gabon and Republic of Congo. In other countries, a selective ban on the wearing of the Islamic dress is in effect. Merkel's call to ban the burqa came weeks after she announced she is seeking a fourth term in office. The German chancellor had been under fire from opponents for her open door policy to migrants from war-torn areas in the Middle East so she expects her campaign next year "to be the toughest to date." It is not the first time that the CDU has called for a ban on the wearing of the Islamic dress in public. German Interior Minister Thomas de Maziere previously said: "It does not fit in our society, for our communication, for our cohesion in the society....This is why we demand you show your face."
