Man who assaulted Dubai cops seeks acquittal

DUBAI – A 48-year-old man from New Zealand is seeking to be acquitted after he was convicted of physically assaulting two Dubai Police officers. The case is now with the Dubai Court of Appeal. A previous ruling by the Dubai Criminal Court found him guilty of attacking the police officers during the February 15 incident in Jumeirah Beach Residence. The court heard that the man attacked the officers after they stopped him for not wearing a face mask. “He shoved my colleague who fell on the ground, then sat on his chest,” one of the officers testified, “When I tried to handcuff him, he grabbed my genitals.” In court, the New Zealander denied that he assaulted the police officers. He was sentenced to six months in prison and subsequent deportation. His lawyer said they are seeking an acquittal based on “clear discrepancies in the statements of both officers”. Awatif Mohammed of Al Rowaad Advocates quoted the police report as saying that the officers said the man tried to assault them as they tied his hands in zip ties. “But during prosecution investigations, they said he actually assaulted them and gave details they didn’t mention before and said they used handcuffs, not zip ties," the lawyer said. She also told judges that the officers said they stopped the man for drinking alcohol, and not to question him on why he was not wearing a face mask. The case continues. ICA/Expat Media
