Woman jailed in Dubai for killing her newborn in Al Rigga apartment

A 28-year-old woman has been jailed in Dubai for killing her newborn and trying to dump the body in a garbage bin. A Dubai court sentenced the woman to seven years in prison. She will be deported after serving her sentence. No details were released about the woman’s identity. According to records, the woman killed her baby just 15 minutes after giving birth in her shared apartment in Al Rigga. She was pregnant out of wedlock. She kept the body in a bag for three days before she tried to dispose of it. As she walked out the corridor, she was spotted by a neighbour, who days earlier heard her screaming in labour pain. He offered to help her dispose of the bag and told her to return to her room. Upon discovering the baby’s body, he then informed police. The woman was immediately arrested. During interrogation, the woman said she placed a pillow over the baby until he suffocated, and that she hid the body in her room for three days before stuffing it into a bag to throw away.

UAE law on babies born out of wedlock

Under the revised UAE law, it is no longer a criminal offense to have a premarital relationship that results in pregnancy. However, murder is considered a heinous crime. Under the revised law that took effect beginning January 2, 2022, in a premarital relationship that results in pregnancy, the unwed couple must acknowledge the baby and care for it, otherwise they will face a criminal case punishable with imprisonment of no less than six months. The couple conceiving a child out of wedlock will also be required to marry; or they can individually or jointly acknowledge the child. They must also ensure that the child is provided identification papers and a passport or travel documents in accordance with the laws of the country where either parent belongs. Unwed couples who fail to acknowledge their baby or provide it with proper identification papers will be sentenced to two years in jail. ICA/Expat Media ALSO READ: New UAE rule for unwed couples, babies born out of wedlock
