Street porter carts to be taken off Dubai streets

DUBAI - The familiar sight of men tugging along porter carts in Dubai’s Naif area may become a thing of the past after Dubai Police replace these carts with pick-up trucks. According to Dubai Police, a proposal is underway for the carts to be taken off Naif streets and replaced with licensed vehicles that shoppers can book through a mobile app. Shoppers in Naif commonly turn to porters to help them carry big boxes of goods but police say this practice breeds accidents and minor crimes, and encourages undocumented workers. Colonel Omar Ashour, deputy head of Naif police station, said some men working as porters are illegal residents, and some “steal a box or two from the goods they are carrying”. The police official also pointed out that random delivery of goods on the porter carts have caused congestion on the busy streets. If the proposal is approved, hundreds of these porter carts will soon be replaced by small and modern pick-up trucks, according to police. Colonel Ashour said it has been proposed that porter carts will be replaced with small pick-up trucks that can be ordered and tracked through an app. ICA/Expat Media
