Motorists who violate pedestrian crossing rules in Abu Dhabi caught by AI radar

New radars powered by Artificial Intelligence (AI) have been activated on Abu Dhabi roads to monitor and catch motorists who do not stop at pedestrian crossings. Violators will be fined Dh500 and given six black points for not giving way to pedestrians. The Abu Dhabi Police said the smart radar system aims to reduce pedestrian runovers in Abu Dhabi by activating a system to control violations committed by drivers as well as jaywalking. The smart system named 'Hather' (Be Careful), aims to alert drivers to follow traffic rules and prioritize pedestrians crossing from designated areas for their safety, according to the police. "Drivers should also comply with traffic signals and drive at the appropriate speed, which might be well below the speed limit in the vicinity of pedestrians and crossings," said an officer. The pilot phase succeeded and authorities are now studying the new smart system near schools and commercial centers in Abu Dhabi. The new radars have already detected several violators during the pilot phase and sent only instructive messages to drivers informing them about the importance of stopping vehicles when pedestrians are crossing.
