Duterte may mediate in Russia-Ukraine conflict: Palace

DUBAI – Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte may possibly mediate in the Russia-Ukraine conflict, according to the Presidential Palace (Malacañang) on Tuesday (March 22). Acting Presidential Spokesperson and Communications Secretary Martin Andanar said that the Philippine president may be convinced to act as mediator if his help is requested. “If world leaders make a request, that’s possible,” Andanar told an online press briefing in Filipino. In his Talk to the People aired on Tuesday, Duterte reiterated that the Philippines would remain neutral in the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Duterte, however, expressed hope that the standoff, which he branded as “stupid war,” would come to an end. “I hope that this war, I said I call it a ‘stupid war,’ dapat mahinto na nila (they should stop it). At this time, we choose to remain neutral. Huwag na muna tayong makialam (Let us not interfere yet),” Duterte said. The conflict between Ukraine and Russia has displaced around 10 million people, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. It has also prompted the mandatory evacuation of Filipinos living in Ukraine, with the Philippines having evacuated around 382 Filipinos so far. ICA/Expat Media
