World’s first 3D printed building opens in Dubai and will house the Dubai Future Foundation
DUBAI – The office of the future has just opened on the Emirates Towers premises in Dubai—all 250 square feet of it a glimpse into what we can expect in Dubai in the next decade or so. His Highness Shaikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, inaugurated the structure on Monday, opening the world’s first 3D printed building to the public.“We implement what we plan, and we pursue actions, not theories. The rapidly changing world requires us to accelerate our pace of development for history does not recognise our plans but our achievements,” Shaikh Mohammad said as he opened the Office of the Future, which will house the temporary office of the Dubai Future Foundation. How did Dubai create this feat? A 3D printer measuring 20 feet high, 120 feet long and 40 feet wide was used to print the building, which was constructed using a special mixture of cement and a set of building materials designed and made in the UAE and the US. A lot of thought went into making the interior and exterior design environmentally friendly. Window shades keep the building cool and help reduce energy consumption, while advanced technology is used to manage information systems in the building. The building is spacious and has plenty of space for exhibitions and workshops as well as other events. Dubai aims to have at least 25 per cent of all its buildings 3D printed by the year 2030. The strategy is part of the Dubai 3D Printing Strategy, which Shaikh Mohammed launched in April to establish Dubai as a leading hub of 3D printing technology. By 2030, Dubai will be using 3D printing to build buildings and mobile homes, residential villas, commercial outlets, galleries and even lighting products, bases and foundations, construction joints, facilities and parks.
