Abu Dhabi gas cylinder explosion: Indian expat among two killed
An Indian expatriate was among two people killed when a gas cylinder exploded at a restaurant in Abu Dhabi, an Indian Embassy spokesperson confirmed on Tuesday (May 24). “Yes, an Indian national has passed away,” an Indian Embassy spokesperson confirmed to media. The incident happened during lunchtime at a popular Indian restaurant located in a five-storey building in the Khalidiyah area near the Shining Tower on Monday (May 23). Police said 120 people were also left injured in the blast and subsequent fire.Out of the injured, 56 suffered moderate injuries while 64 suffered minor injuries. The Department of Health – Abu Dhabi confirmed on Tuesday that all injuries resulted from the explosion. All the injured are undergoing treatment, with authorities arranging family visits to hospitals and healthcare facilities where the victims have been admitted. Meanwhile, Abu Dhabi Civil Defence said that the blast also sparked a fire that damaged the facades of six buildings and several vehicles. Residents of four damaged buildings were safely evacuated. Authorities are currently working on giving the displaced residents temporary housing while securing the affected buildings.
