Philippines: First batch of Filipino hotel workers sent to Israel

As part of the existing bilateral labor agreement, the Philippines has sent the first batch of Filipino hotel workers to Israel after deployment was stalled due to COVID restrictions. On Wednesday (June 1), the Department of Migrant Workers said in a Facebook post that they sent off 61 out of the 500 overseas Filipino workers to Israel. DMW Secretary Abdullah Mama-o said that “As Israel reopens its tourism industry, the [DMW] is looking forward to sending more qualified workers to supplement its growing demand in the hospitality sector while making sure that the best terms and [conditions] for our OFWs are being met.” Signed in 2018, the agreement targets to give “strengthened protection and employment opportunities to Filipino hotel workers.” The agreement also intends to guarantee that the OFWs would no longer pay extra fees to private agencies since they will be deployed under the government-to-government scheme. The deployed OFWs are expected to arrive in Israel on Thursday, June 2. BKM/ Expat Media
