PhilHealth premium increase: Senator JV urges suspension of fee hikes

Senator-elect Joseph Victor “JV” Ejercito has urged the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) to suspend its scheduled premium hike this June, calling it an “insensitive” move. Starting in June, the premium rate collection will be 4 percent, PhilHealth announced earlier. Ejercito said the scheduled increase should be suspended since Filipinos are still reeling from the economic impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. “Any increase at this time would be insensitive to the plight of our fellow Filipinos. Our countrymen, who though have somewhat recovered from the pandemic physically are still struggling to recuperate and stabilize their economic well-being,” Ejercito said in a statement. “Premium hikes should only be implemented once the country finally recovers,” he pointed out. PhilHealth earlier announced that an increase in contributions starting June would be retroactive from January. This means that on top of increased contributions to be deducted from an employee’s salary starting June, PhilHealth members would also have to pay a 1 percent additional premium for the months of January until May. PhilHealth contributions will range from P400 to P3,200 for those with a monthly basic salary of P10,000.01 to P79,999. The contribution rate is P3,200 for those who earn P80,000 and above. The increase in contributions is provided under the Universal Health Care law, which mandates that the premium rate shall increase by increments of 0.5 percent every year starting from 3 percent in 2020 until it reaches 5 percent.
