Dubai project aims to create digital maps for self-driving cars

The Municipality of Dubai has initiated a project to create "highly accurate" digital maps for self-driving cars. The project, which was launched by the city's Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Centre, will be used by companies that provide autonomous car solutions. A 4WD equipped with cameras will be used to prepare the digital maps, according to a photo shared by the municipality. According to the municipality, these maps would be created "in accordance with the highest international standards and procedures." For self-driving cars to negotiate city streets, they need detailed maps. Dubai has developed a smart self-driving transportation policy with the goal of converting 25 percent of all trips to driverless by 2030. When it comes to readiness for driverless vehicles, global consulting firm KPMG rates the UAE among the top countries. The RTA had previously stated that driverless taxis and e-Hail services would be trialed by the end of 2022. Cruise will launch a small number of autonomous vehicles in 2023, with ambitions to expand to 4,000 by 2030. KMB/Expat Media
