Asian maid using witchcraft to assert control over employer jailed

On charges of practicing witchcraft and sorcery against her employer, a 25-year-old Asian housemaid was sentenced to one month in prison by the Dubai Misdemeanors Court. The employer claimed she was suffering from mental and physical exhaustion and suspected that her housemaid used black magic to hurt her, according to inquiry details. She told prosecutors that she observed her housemaid showing weird behavior and whispering strange words in the middle of the night while in the bathroom. When confronted, the housemaid denied casting any spell on her employer. However, her employer discovered a blood-soaked cloth in the woman's room, and also found that she was communicating with a stranger on the phone about magic. During police interrogation, the housemaid admitted that she contacted one of her cousins to connect her with a "religious man". The man allegedly asked for Dh200 so he can perform "special prayers" that would make her boss treat her properly. He also sent her a picture of a doll on WhatsApp and instructed the housemaid to save it on her phone for the incantation to work. When asked about the voodoo in her possession, the housemaid claimed that she wanted to protect her husband from marrying another woman. At the Dubai Misdemeanours Court, the judge found her guilty of practicing witchcraft and sorcery, and ordered that she be deported from the UAE after serving one month in jail. KMB/Expat Media
